What is Wegovy?

Wegovy (Semaglutide 2.4 mg) — How It Works

Wegovy is a once-weekly injectable medicine by Novo Nordisk containing semaglutide. In India it is approved by the Central Drugs Standard Control Organisation (CDSCO) for chronic weight management, and it has been available in India since 2025. This page is part of our complete GLP-1 therapy guide for India.

Wegovy is a GLP-1 receptor agonist — it mimics a natural gut hormone that signals fullness to the brain, slows stomach emptying, and improves insulin sensitivity. Combined with nutrition and activity, this can reduce appetite and support sustained, medically supervised weight loss.

Semaglutide also has two clinically notable features for the right patients: it has cardiovascular outcome data from a large trial programme (SELECT), and it is being studied in fatty-liver disease (MASH). These are general points of evidence, not a promise of any individual result.

In India, Wegovy is prescribed for adults with BMI ≥30 (obesity), or BMI ≥27 with a weight-related condition such as type-2 diabetes, hypertension, high cholesterol, fatty liver, or PCOS. It is prescription-only and must be used under medical supervision.

"For many patients, semaglutide at the right maintenance dose is a sensible balance of effectiveness and a well-characterised safety and evidence base. But it is a tool that works only with proper patient selection, careful dosing, and monitoring — alongside nutrition and activity. It is not for everyone, and it is not a shortcut."— Dr. Manuj Sondhi, MRCP (UK), Consultant Physician & Diabetologist, Nirvana Clinic, Greater Noida

Supervised Care

How Supervised Treatment Works at Nirvana Clinic

A medically supervised programme — not a prescribe-and-send-away service. Where treatment is appropriate, Dr. Manuj monitors progress at every step.

1
Initial Assessment
Full clinical evaluation — BMI, blood tests (HbA1c, kidney, liver, lipids, thyroid), history, and a cardiovascular review — to assess whether a medicine is appropriate at all.
2
If Appropriate, Start
Where indicated, treatment begins with guidance on technique, a side-effect plan, and dietary and activity advice. The appropriate option is decided with the physician.
3
Careful Titration
The dose is increased gradually, as tolerated, with progress tracked through weight, labs, and review. Rushing is the main cause of intolerance.
4
Maintenance & Review
A structured plan for treatment duration and, where appropriate, tapering — with lifestyle anchoring to support lasting results.

Wegovy (semaglutide 2.4 mg) is approved in India for chronic weight management in adults with obesity, or with overweight plus a weight-related condition. It is a once-weekly injectable, prescription-only medicine that must be used under medical supervision.

QHow does Wegovy work?

Wegovy is a GLP-1 receptor agonist. It mimics a natural gut hormone that signals fullness, slows stomach emptying, and improves insulin sensitivity — which can reduce appetite and support weight loss with nutrition and activity. Semaglutide also has cardiovascular outcome data (SELECT) and is being studied in fatty-liver disease (MASH).

QHow does Wegovy differ from tirzepatide (Mounjaro)?

Wegovy contains semaglutide and acts on the GLP-1 receptor; Mounjaro contains tirzepatide and acts on two receptors (GIP and GLP-1).
