Wegovy for Weight Loss
in India — Semaglutide
India's most established once-weekly weight loss injection — semaglutide 2.4 mg. Average 14.9% body weight loss with proven cardiovascular benefits (SELECT trial). Now significantly more affordable after the April 2026 price cut. Supervised by Dr. Manuj Sondhi, MRCP UK, at Nirvana Clinic, Greater Noida.
India's Most Established Weight Loss Injection — Now Far More Affordable
Wegovy (semaglutide 2.4 mg) is a once-weekly injectable medication by Novo Nordisk, approved by India's DCGI and launched in India in June 2025. It is the most extensively studied weight loss medication available globally — with over a decade of clinical evidence and proven cardiovascular protection benefits that no other weight loss drug currently has.
Wegovy works as a GLP-1 receptor agonist — it mimics a natural gut hormone that signals fullness to the brain, slows stomach emptying, and improves insulin sensitivity. The result is reduced appetite, smaller portion sizes, and sustained weight loss over time.
In the landmark STEP-1 trial, patients on Wegovy 2.4 mg lost an average of 14.9% of their body weight over 68 weeks — roughly 15 kg for a 100 kg patient. While Mounjaro (tirzepatide) produces slightly more weight loss, Wegovy has two clinical advantages that matter for many patients:
1. Cardiovascular outcomes proven. The SELECT trial demonstrated a 20% reduction in major adverse cardiac events (heart attacks, strokes, cardiovascular death) in patients with established cardiovascular disease. Semaglutide has this evidence base. Tirzepatide does not — its cardiovascular outcomes trial is still ongoing.
2. FDA-approved for MASH (fatty liver). Wegovy is now approved in the US for the treatment of metabolic dysfunction-associated steatohepatitis (MASH) — the inflammatory form of fatty liver disease. For patients whose primary problem is liver disease, this is a meaningful clinical edge.
In India, Wegovy is prescribed for adults with BMI ≥30 (obesity), or BMI ≥27 with weight-related comorbidities such as Type 2 Diabetes, hypertension, high cholesterol, fatty liver, or PCOS.
"For most of my patients, Wegovy at the proper maintenance dose is the right balance of effectiveness, safety, and affordability. The April 2026 price cut and the launch of Poviztra — Novo's second brand of the same molecule — have made semaglutide therapy genuinely accessible in India for the first time. For patients who don't specifically need the additional weight loss that Mounjaro provides, Wegovy is the more sensible long-term choice."— Dr. Manuj Sondhi, MRCP UK, Diabetologist & GLP-1 Specialist, Nirvana Clinic, Greater Noida
Wegovy Price in India — All Doses
After Novo Nordisk's April 2026 price cut of up to 48%, Wegovy is now significantly more affordable. Starting dose is 0.25 mg — titrated up over 16 weeks to the 2.4 mg maintenance dose.
Wegovy vs Mounjaro — Which is Right for You?
Both are excellent weight loss medications. Mounjaro produces more weight loss, but Wegovy has unique cardiovascular and fatty liver benefits — at significantly lower cost.

Who Should — and Should Not — Take Wegovy
How Wegovy Treatment Works at Nirvana Clinic
A medically supervised programme — not a prescription-and-send-away service. Dr. Manuj monitors your progress at every step of the 16-week titration and beyond.
Full clinical evaluation — BMI, blood tests (HbA1c, kidney, liver, lipids, thyroid), medical history, cardiovascular risk assessment, and weight loss goals.
Start at 0.25 mg weekly. Detailed injection technique guidance. Side effect management plan. Choice between branded Wegovy, Poviztra, or quality generic semaglutide based on your budget.
Dose increased every 4 weeks as tolerated: 0.25 → 0.5 → 1.0 → 1.7 → 2.4 mg. Progress tracked with weight, HbA1c, and labs. Reach maintenance dose around week 17.
Continue at maintenance dose for 12–18 months minimum. Structured exit plan or indefinite maintenance based on response. Lifestyle anchoring to prevent regain.

His approach: evidence-based patient selection, careful dose titration, honest cost-benefit discussion (including affordable Poviztra and generic semaglutide options), and long-term metabolic follow-up.
Wegovy India — Frequently Asked Questions
QIs Wegovy approved in India for weight loss?▼
Yes. Wegovy (semaglutide 2.4 mg) is DCGI-approved and was launched in India in June 2025 by Novo Nordisk. It is approved specifically for chronic weight management in adults with BMI ≥30 (obesity), or BMI ≥27 with at least one weight-related comorbidity (Type 2 Diabetes, hypertension, dyslipidaemia, fatty liver, sleep apnoea, or CVD). It must be prescribed and supervised by a qualified physician.
QWhat is the price of Wegovy in India in 2026?▼
After Novo Nordisk's April 2026 price cut of up to 48%, Wegovy now costs ₹5,660/month at starting dose (0.25 mg) and ₹16,400/month at maintenance dose (2.4 mg). For more affordable options of the same molecule, Poviztra (Emcure-Novo second brand) costs ₹3,999–8,999/month, and generic semaglutide starts at ₹1,290/month vial format.
QHow much weight will I lose with Wegovy?▼
In the STEP-1 clinical trial, patients on 2.4 mg Wegovy lost an average of 14.9% of their body weight over 68 weeks — roughly 15 kg for a 100 kg patient. Individual results vary: predictors of good response include female sex, lower starting HbA1c, absence of long-term insulin use, and consistent adherence to the dosing schedule. Around 32% of trial patients achieved ≥20% weight loss.
QIs Wegovy better than Mounjaro?▼
For pure weight loss magnitude, Mounjaro produces more (~20% vs ~14% in SURMOUNT-5). But Wegovy has three advantages: (1) it is significantly cheaper, especially with Poviztra and generics available, (2) it has proven cardiovascular outcomes (SELECT trial: 20% MACE reduction) which Mounjaro doesn't yet, and (3) it is FDA-approved for MASH/fatty liver. For most patients, Wegovy is the more sensible long-term choice. See our full Mounjaro vs Wegovy India guide.
QWhat is Poviztra and is it the same as Wegovy?▼
Poviztra is Novo Nordisk's second brand of Wegovy in India, distributed by Emcure Pharmaceuticals since December 2025. It is the same 2.4 mg semaglutide injection, manufactured by Novo Nordisk in the same facilities, in the same pre-filled pen device. After the April 2026 price cut, Poviztra costs ₹3,999–8,999/month — roughly 45% cheaper than branded Wegovy. There is no clinical difference between them.
QWhat are the side effects of Wegovy?▼
The most common side effects are nausea, diarrhoea, constipation, vomiting, and reduced appetite — particularly during dose escalation. These are usually mild and improve with time. Slower dose titration significantly reduces side effects. Rare but serious risks include pancreatitis, gallbladder disease, and kidney injury from dehydration — which is why medical supervision is essential. See our GLP-1 side effects management guide for detailed help.
QWill I regain weight after stopping Wegovy?▼
Studies show that most patients regain 60–80% of lost weight within 12 months of stopping semaglutide without a structured maintenance plan. Wegovy is best considered an indefinite chronic treatment, similar to how we treat hypertension. If you must stop, Dr. Manuj's programme includes a structured taper and lifestyle anchoring phase to minimise regain.
QHow is Wegovy different from Ozempic? They're both semaglutide.▼
Wegovy and Ozempic are the same molecule (semaglutide) made by the same manufacturer (Novo Nordisk), but at different doses and approved for different conditions. Wegovy goes up to 2.4 mg and is approved for obesity. Ozempic goes up to 1 mg and is approved for Type 2 Diabetes. For weight loss, the higher Wegovy dose is more effective. In India both are available — see our Ozempic India 2026 price guide for the diabetes indication.
