After a possible HIV exposure, the hardest part is often knowing how urgently to act. The single most important fact is timing: if there has been a genuine risk, PEP can prevent HIV — but it must be started within 72 hours, and the sooner the better. After that window, the focus shifts to testing at the right time. This self-check exists to help you tell those situations apart quickly and privately, and to connect you with confidential specialist care if you need it.

How It Works

What the three questions decide

1

What happened

Different exposures carry very different HIV risk — a condom break or needle injury is weighed differently from oral sex, and an assault pathway is handled with extra care.

2

When it happened

This decides whether you may still be inside the 72-hour PEP window, where prevention is possible, or past it, where testing becomes the priority.

3

The other person's status

A partner who is HIV-negative, or HIV-positive but reliably undetectable (U=U), changes the picture entirely versus an unknown or untreated status.

The result is a starting point, not a verdict. It tells you how urgently to act and what kind of help fits — then a confidential consultation confirms your real risk and arranges anything needed.
Frequently Asked Questions

About this tool

Does this tool diagnose HIV or tell me my status?
No. It is an educational self-check that helps you understand whether your situation points to urgent PEP, scheduled testing, or reassurance. It cannot diagnose HIV or confirm your status — only a proper test, at the right time, can do that.
What is PEP, and why does the 72-hour limit matter?
PEP (post-exposure prophylaxis) is a short course of medicine that can prevent HIV after a possible exposure. It works best the sooner it is started and is generally only effective if begun within 72 hours — which is why the tool treats a recent, higher-risk exposure as time-critical.
If the tool says “low risk,” do I still need a test?
Often yes. A reassuring result is not the same as a negative test. Depending on what happened, HIV testing at the right window and STI screening may still be worthwhile — a short confidential consultation will confirm what, if anything, you need.
Are my answers private? Is anything stored?
Your answers stay in your browser on this page and are not stored or sent anywhere. Nothing is shared unless you choose to contact the clinic via WhatsApp or phone.
The result said to act urgently — what should I do?
Contact the clinic straight away by phone or WhatsApp for a confidential assessment, because PEP is time-sensitive. If you are in immediate danger or have a medical emergency, call 112.
Can I use this for someone else, or after helping a patient?
Yes — you can use it to think through a friend’s or partner’s situation, or as a quick orientation before contacting the clinic. It is general guidance only and does not replace an individual medical assessment.
