Prediabetes: Can You Reverse It?
Prediabetes means your blood sugar is higher than normal but not yet in the diabetes range — and in many people it can be brought back to normal with the right changes, before it becomes diabetes. Dr. Manuj Sondhi, MRCP (UK), a Consultant Physician & Diabetologist at Nirvana Clinic, Greater Noida, helps people with prediabetes or "borderline sugar" act early.
What Counts as Prediabetes
Prediabetes is a stage where blood sugar is raised but has not reached the level used to diagnose diabetes. It is a warning sign — and also an opportunity, because this is the stage where progression can most often be slowed or reversed. The values below are the commonly used reference ranges (your doctor interprets them alongside your overall picture):
| Test | Normal | Prediabetes | Diabetes |
|---|---|---|---|
| HbA1c | Below 5.7% | 5.7–6.4% | 6.5% or above |
| Fasting glucose | Below 100 mg/dL | 100–125 mg/dL | 126 mg/dL or above |
| 2-hour post-meal | Below 140 mg/dL | 140–199 mg/dL | 200 mg/dL or above |
Can Prediabetes Be Reversed?
Often, yes. Unlike established diabetes, prediabetes frequently returns to normal blood sugar when the underlying drivers — weight, diet pattern and physical activity — are addressed early. In the landmark Diabetes Prevention Program (DPP) study, structured lifestyle change reduced the risk of progressing from prediabetes to type 2 diabetes by around 58% over about three years — more than medication did in the same trial.
That doesn't mean it happens automatically or for everyone. Results vary from person to person, and the earlier and more consistently the changes are made, the better the chance of returning to normal and staying there.
Why acting now matters
Left unaddressed, a meaningful proportion of people with prediabetes go on to develop type 2 diabetes over the following years. Catching it at the prediabetes stage gives the best window to avoid that.
